Post
A post in terms of structure is a vertical upright, usually made of timber or metal, which is used as a support or marker. It is similar to a column or pillar, and the term is often used interchangeably with ‘stud’, however, a stud is generally lighter than a post and is a fundamental component of timber frame construction.
Timber post and beam construction is a building method that comprises vertical structural posts and horizontal beams, jointed to form a structural frame into which walls are ‘placed’. For more information, see Timber post and beam construction.
Posts were also traditionally used in a post-and-lintel system in which two upright posts hold up a horizontal lintel which is laid across the top of them.
Posts are also a key component in a timber fence.
